Most people do not wake up one morning and decide to drift away from God.
Catch us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes (Song of Solomon 2:15).
It happens quietly.
A missed prayer here.
A neglected Bible there.
A little compromise excused away.
A little numbness ignored.
A little less conviction.
A little less awe.
The heart rarely hardens all at once. It cools slowly, like embers fading beneath ash.
That is what makes spiritual drift so dangerous. It often feels normal while it is happening. Hebrews warns us, “We must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1)
Drift is subtle. It sounds like, “I’m just tired.” “I’ll pray tomorrow.” “I’m too busy.” “It’s not that serious.” “I just don’t feel close to God right now.”
And slowly, without realizing it, we begin feeding our flesh more faithfully than our spirit.
Prayer becomes occasional instead of necessary. Worship becomes background noise. Conviction becomes irritation instead of invitation. Church becomes routine instead of reverence.
We still know the songs.
Still know the verses.
Still know how to sound spiritual.
But inwardly, something has gone dim.
And the terrifying thing about drift is that if we ignore it long enough, eventually we stop missing what we lost.
No one notices sunset in a single second.
Darkness arrives gradually.
But here is the mercy of God: He still calls wandering hearts home.
Not with condemnation, but with invitation.
The Lord does not stand at the edge of our drift screaming shame.
He calls gently, “Return to Me.”
And maybe that return does not begin with some dramatic emotional moment. Maybe it begins with five quiet minutes in prayer. Maybe it begins with opening the Bible again even when you do not feel anything yet.
Maybe it begins with honesty. “Lord, my heart feels distant, but I do not want to stay here.”
Even weak hunger is still hunger.
And God knows how to revive starving hearts.
Love ya, and He does too!
